![]() ![]() This is probably one of the most repeated threads on the forum, second only to submarines.īasically, this is the NA forum and the vast majority is going to say Iowa and cite fire control, because obviously the home team has the best stuff, right?Īmerican steelworking was second to none, our material science was exemplary for many reasons including the massive steelworking companies looking to get a leg up on each other, iron reserves that weren't poisoned by carbon or sulfur (the former being a trademark of Japanese steel, the later of Chinese). Any captain seeking to engage would have to close the range, and as soon as you do Iowa forsakes any advantage it might've had. Only straddles have ever been achieved at just within that range. At ranges exceeding 35,000 yards (32 km), regardless of how well either side shoots, the dispersion becomes so great it's barely worth shooting. At longer ranges where your typical USN FCS argument would bear more weight, it's honestly irrelevant. Her belt is thick enough to resist the Mk.7's AP beyond 26,000 yards, and her deck is thick enough to keep her safe from plunging fire within 35,000 yards.Īt ranged within 26,000 yards, the difference in fire control and general accuracy isn't enough to favor Iowa. On the other hand, Yamato does have a decently sized immunity zone compared to her American foe. It doesn't matter where Iowa is, she 's vulnerable. If the Iowa is far enough from Yamato for her belt to resist that AP, her deck will be vulnerable. If she's close enough for her deck to bounce Yamato's AP, it's close enough for the belt to be penetrated. Iowa has no immunity zone versus Yamato's guns. The cold reality comes down to who can actually put the hurt on who at what range. t out of modernized WWI-era battlecruisers, specifically Kongo. ![]() Yamato was meant to be the ultimate anti-BB. First off, your standard this is a what-if I'm replying to only, obviously irl they'd never be fighting alone, etc, etc. ![]()
